Japanese Maple

This beautiful specimen is
Japanese maple (Acer palmatum). It is native to Japan, Korea, and parts of China.

Key identifying features:

  • Palmate leaves with 5–9 pointed, serrated lobes (classic maple shape, but finer and more delicate than larger maples like sugar or red maple).
  • Spectacular autumn colour ranging from bright red and orange to yellow and even purple tones in the same tree
  • Domed, cascading, or weeping growth habit that often forms a broad, rounded canopy, making the tree look almost cloud-like in full autumn colour.

Japanese Maple grows well in the British Climate. There are many cultivars some of which can grow six to ten metres in height. Less mature trees can suffer in times of drought, and should be well watered.
Smaller varieties are well suited to borders, or containers.
The tree in this photograph is located in the Savill Garden in Windsor Great Park.
